She’s earned a named for herself as the Princes’ Bane, but when she kills another prince a few weeks earlier-as she is only allowed to take the heart of a “man” once a year, her mother decides to punish her in the worst way possible. Every year she takes the heart of some hapless prince who dares to be sailing on her ocean. There’s a difference, in most literature and in this world too of course! Lira is the daughter of the Sea Queen, who’s very Ursula like even though she’s a siren too, and she longs for the day that she will take her mother’s place. I was most ecstatic to read Alexandra Christo’s debut To Kill a Kingdom that has a The Little Mermaid flair to it, though this is not your ordinary retelling, more that the fairy tale was a base for this story! This story was truly unique and enthralling! It pretty much held me spellbound throughout because everything is not what you would expect from this story!įirst off, our heroine, Lira-note that spelling there, look familiar?-is not a mermaid, but a siren. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 July 2023 I have loved the Disney version since I was five, and now this book will always be one of my favourite adult retellings This book was everything I needed in a dark, twisted retelling to fulfil my little mermaid obsession. I really wish this was a duology as I feel like the ending was a little rushed aside from that it was a fantastic read. The character development and world building were amazing, and I loved the banter between the two main characters. Robbed of her voice, lira has until winter solstice to deliver prince Elian's heart or remain human forever. As punishment, the sea queen transforms lira into the one thing sirens loathe the most - A HUNAN. She is revered across the sea until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. "I have a heart for every year I've been alive. So I should not be dissecting it this hard.īut if you are an adult. And this book is strongly towards the teens. Then again I would say, that I am in my 20s. It was feeling really a lot like Roleplay writings. The author was telling us the details rather than showing them. But in the book, the descriptions were very unnecessary. The writing style got a lot better towards the middle of the book. While Elian really has an one track mind (in a weird way) and it is bit of a His side of romance is a lot like suddenly imposed.

The story is a lot better when told from Lira's side. But if in her place it was anyone else (if they act like that around anyone who stubbles upon them) I would say they are pretty mean people to be acting like that. Though, as it's being told and acted out at Lira. And why they actually thought world revoled around them. And why Kye held him at such and high respect. The book has POV changes as chapters, so that can be confusing.Īlso, the author didn't make it clear why Elian was so protected. But the way the plot moved and the way it ended wasn't too flattering. Now this book has 43 chapters, and you have to read till 20th chapter to actually get the story rolling. The book isn't too thick, the print size is medium.and papers are thick enough. My rate and review is for the book plot and writting. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good-But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?Alexandra Christo's debut is a dark and richly imagined take on The Little Mermaid that will leave readers breathless. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby-it’s his calling. The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world.
